Trivial Pursuit Cucina Italiana is Here: When Food Becomes a Game

An icon of board games meets the flavors, history, and traditions of Italian gastronomy with the launch of Trivial Pursuit Cucina Italiana, the first edition of the world-famous quiz game dedicated entirely to Italy's culinary heritage. Set to arrive in stores for Christmas 2026 as a limited edition of 5,000 copies, this initiative transforms the UNESCO recognition of Italian cuisine as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity into an engaging and educational experience.

Produced by Winning Moves under license from Hasbro and distributed in Italy by Karma at a retail price of €49.90, the project features scientific curation by the Gualtiero Marchesi Academy, alongside contributions from over fifty chefs, research institutions, protection consortia, university professors, and experts across art, cinema, and literature. The box prominently displays the official UNESCO logo, authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry in recognition of its profound cultural significance.

Maintaining the classic mechanics of traditional Trivial Pursuit, the game offers 1,800 questions arranged across six main thematic areas. Players can challenge each other across History and Tradition to explore the origins and language of food, Ingredients and Raw Materials highlighting biodiversity and PDO/PGI products, and Recipes and Techniques centered on regional dishes and professional cooking methods. Other categories include Art, Curiosities and Culture exploring food in cinema and design, Great Chefs and Restaurants revisiting iconic figures and venues, and Wines and Beverages taking players on a journey through wine regions and DOCG denominations.

Built entirely without promotional motives to foster authentic cultural sharing, the development process brought together top-tier scientific and cultural institutions. During the official launch in Milan on October 13, 2026, key contributors shared significant insights into the project.

Enrico Dandolo, President of the Gualtiero Marchesi ETS Foundation, highlighted how Italy's diverse microclimates make its cuisine the most fusion in the world, echoing Master Marchesi’s teaching on the priceless value of Italian culinary heritage. Stefania Ruggeri, Director at the CREA Food and Nutrition Research Centre, emphasized the role of scientific research in uncovering the nutritional quality and cultural depth of traditional recipes. From the wine and food protection sectors, Saverio Galli Torrini (Director of the Chianti Wine Consortium) and Andrea Mancuso Morini (Project Manager at the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI Protection Consortium) noted the power of a board game to make complex connections between land, certification, and identity accessible to everyone. On the academic side, Professor Giovanna Frosini (PRIN AtLiTeG at the University for Foreigners of Siena) underscored the value of sharing the linguistic history of food, while chef Enrico Bartolini reflected on the joy of conscious choices and sharing at the table. Finally, MasterChef director Umberto Spinazzola captured the relationship between food and visual storytelling: “Television chews cuisine quickly. Cinema savor cuisine slowly.”

A unique opportunity for families, food lovers, and industry professionals alike to test their knowledge and celebrate the richness of Italian gastronomy while having fun.
