Un evento cinematografico straordinario si appresta a conquistare le sale italiane dal 7 all’11 ottobre grazie alla distribuzione in esclusiva di NEXO STUDIOS. Sul grande schermo sbarca “QUEEN BUDAPEST”, lo storico film concerto della leggendaria band britannica, per la prima volta restituito al pubblico in una spettacolare versione restaurata in 4K e con un nuovo missaggio audio realizzato dalle registrazioni multitraccia originali.
L'appuntamento rappresenta una pietra miliare per tutti gli appassionati di musica e cinema. Il concerto fu registrato il 27 luglio 1986 al Népstadion di Budapest durante il celebre "The Magic Tour", un momento storico in cui Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor e John Deacon divennero i primi rappresentanti del rock occidentale a esibirsi con un mega show oltre la Cortina di ferro. Quella magica serata registrò il tutto esaurito con ben 80.000 spettatori all'interno dello stadio e oltre 45.000 fan accalcati all'esterno, giunti persino da Russia e Polonia per ascoltare la band dal vivo.
Per i membri della band quel live ebbe un significato emotivo e culturale ben più profondo di una semplice tappa del tour. Brian May ricorda come per anni i fan oltre la Cortina di ferro avessero potuto ascoltare la loro musica solo tramite cassette illegali, rendendo la possibilità di vederli dal vivo un momento di straordinaria intensità. Il chitarrista sottolinea la sensazione di partecipare a qualcosa di davvero importante, citando l'esecuzione della canzone popolare ungherese, imparata insieme a Freddie Mercury per l'occasione, come uno dei momenti più commoventi dell'intera serata. Sulla stessa linea Roger Taylor ribadisce la filosofia del gruppo, da sempre convinto che la musica possa superare qualsiasi barriera politica e unire le persone, ricordando con un sorriso come Freddie si fosse persino scritto il testo fonetico sul dorso della mano prima che il pubblico iniziasse a cantare all'unisono.
Trattandosi dell'ultima esibizione live dei Queen al completo immortalata su pellicola prima della scomparsa del loro indimenticabile frontman, l'opera unisce una potenza scenica ineguagliabile a un valore documentaristico inestimabile. La produzione ungherese della Mafilm mise in campo sforzi imponenti per l'epoca: 17 tra i migliori operatori cinematografici del Paese impiegarono circa 40 chilometri di pellicola 35mm, utilizzando riprese aeree da elicotteri e macchine da presa distribuite in ogni angolo dello stadio. Oltre all'esibizione sul palco, il film include preziosi momenti di vita quotidiana e frammenti dei cinque giorni trascorsi dai quattro musicisti tra le meraviglie della capitale ungherese.
Il lavoro di restauro visivo è stato curato dagli studi neozelandesi Park Road Post Production di Sir Peter Jackson, che hanno digitalizzato in 4K i negativi originali conservati presso l'archivio del National Film Institute ungherese. Brian May ha espresso enorme entusiasmo per il risultato ottenuto dal team di Jackson, definendo le immagini perfette e la qualità del suono da capogiro, capace di offrire nei cinema l'esperienza più realistica e coinvolgente mai realizzata dei loro anni d'oro. Parallelamente, il team audio della band ha rilavorato sui nastri multitraccia originali per restituire la sensazione di trovarsi direttamente sotto il palco.
La scaletta comprende le interpretazioni di inni intramontabili quali “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Will Rock You”, “We Are The Champions”, “Radio Ga Ga”, “Under Pressure” e “A Kind Of Magic”, oltre al già citato arrangiamento acustico del canto tradizionale ungherese “Tavaszi Szél Vizet Áraszt”.
Dopo l'uscita nei cinema dal 7 all'11 ottobre, l'esperienza proseguirà a partire dal 30 ottobre con la pubblicazione da parte di Legacy Recordings di un'edizione multiformato che includerà la colonna sonora in CD, per la prima volta in cofanetto da tre vinili, oltre ai formati Blu-ray e DVD. "QUEEN BUDAPEST", the historic concert film by the legendary British band, arrives on the big screen for the first time in a spectacular 4K restoration with fully remixed audio.
This release marks a milestone for music and cinema enthusiasts alike. Recorded on July 27, 1986, at Budapest's Népstadion during the band's famous "The Magic Tour", it captures a historic moment when Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon became the first Western rock act to stage a stadium show behind the Iron Curtain. That magical evening sold out all 80,000 tickets inside the stadium, while an estimated 45,000 fans gathered outside—some traveling from as far as Russia and Poland just to hear the band live.
For the band members, the concert carried an emotional and cultural significance that went far beyond an ordinary tour stop. Brian May recalled how fans behind the Iron Curtain had only been able to listen to their music through bootleg cassettes for years, making the opportunity to see them live an overwhelmingly intense experience. The guitarist highlighted the sense of participating in something truly pivotal, citing the performance of the Hungarian folk song—learned together with Freddie Mercury specifically for the show—as one of the most moving moments of the night. Echoing those sentiments, Roger Taylor reaffirmed the group's core philosophy that music can transcend political boundaries and bring people together, fondly remembering how Freddie had even written the phonetic lyrics on the back of his hand before the audience spontaneously sang along.
As the final live performance of the full Queen lineup ever captured on film before the loss of their irreplaceable frontman, the film seamlessly combines raw stage power with priceless historical value. The Hungarian production by Mafilm deployed unprecedented resources for the era: 17 of the country's top cinematographers used roughly 40 kilometers of 35mm film, incorporating aerial helicopter footage and cameras positioned throughout the stadium. Beyond the main concert, the film features rare behind-the-scenes footage of the four band members exploring the iconic sights of the Hungarian capital over the five preceding days.
The visual restoration was handled by Sir Peter Jackson's Park Road Post Production in New Zealand, scanning the original 35mm negatives preserved by the National Film Institute of Hungary in 4K resolution. Brian May expressed high praise for Jackson's team, describing the images as flawless and the audio quality as breathtaking—offering audiences the most realistic and immersive Queen live experience from their golden era. Simultaneously, the band's studio audio team remixed the original multitrack tapes to put viewers right in the heart of the crowd.
The setlist features timeless anthems including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Will Rock You", "We Are The Champions", "Radio Ga Ga", "Under Pressure", and "A Kind Of Magic", alongside the poignant acoustic performance of the traditional Hungarian song "Tavaszi Szél Vizet Áraszt".
